1930 Snapshot of Life

Along Boston Turnpike (Route 9)

The 1930 plan for widening the Boston-Worcester Turnpike in the town of Shrewsbury was laid out by the County Commissioners by decree No. 878. Snapshots were taken of the northeast side of the road for the first 12-mile stretch of construction. The research included in this collection is unique and was completed by Paul Brueggemann in 2024. There are 104 images in the collection. Parcels (land takings) start with the lowest number at the Lake Quinsigamond Bridge and continue east to the town of Northborough.

Below is a quick slideshow of ten parcels that were moved for construction.
Included is a map of the Boston Turnpike in Shrewsbury showing their locations.

Background: Original negatives are in the possession of historian Frank Morrill, Charlton, MA. who acquired them while cleaning out a building on Front Street, Worcester. Permission was obtained from Frank by Paul Brueggemann after a visit to his home on April 6, 2024 to use the photos in any way deemed fit.  Explicit permission was granted after telling him about my work on the Shrewsbury Historical Society website. I physically viewed all the negatives that Frank had in a notebook marked “Shrewsbury”.

Acknowledgements: Frank Morrill for lending the images and Justin Dobson, Shrewsbury Assistant Town Manager for finding town plans that aligned land parcels with locations.
